LA TRISTE HISTORIA DE MAGDALENA Y JESUS

THE MUSIC

_______________________________________

Over the span of an extraordinary career, composer Arturo Márquez has explored a dazzling range of musical styles - from Latin to jazz to contemporary - but above all, classical concert music.  It is a journey that continues to this day.  From the dancehall rhythms of Veracruz with its sensual infusion of Cuban and Haitian syncopation (Danzón No.'s 1-8), to a recent paean to the Mexican state of Chiapas featuring the New World's marimba and Africa's balafón, Márquez is always blazing new trails.

Now he is embarked on what he describes as the pinnacle of his life's work - a new symphony dedicated to one of the Mexico's most important and meaningful cultural events - the Day of the Dead.
